Multiple Manitoba Millionaires

Winnipeg was the place to be this May long weekend, as three prizes of $1 million or more were won in the city.

Jamie Loewen remembers how he discovered his $1 million LOTTO MAX win.

“My wife was staining the fence, and I was setting up the pool with the kids,” he remembered. “So the kids and I thought we’d walk to 7-Eleven to get Slurpees.”

Loewen had his LOTTO MAX ticket from the previous Friday’s draw with him, so he scanned it at the store’s self-serve ticket checker. He was shocked to see that he’d won one of the $1 million MAXMILLIONS prizes offered on the May 18 draw.

“And then everything went quiet,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it! I started panicking; I just wanted to get home.”

While Loewen waited with the clerk to talk to WCLC about the win, he called his wife to come pick up the kids.

“I didn’t tell her why, and I told the kids not to say anything until I got home,” he said. “Of course, they did.”

“She didn’t believe it, though. We play a lot of pranks on each other,” he laughed.

Loewen said he plans to use some of his windfall to buy a newer vehicle and save for his kids’ educations. And he said there’s one other dream the prize will help fulfill for the whole family.

“We’re going to buy a house where the kids can each have their own room,” he said.

Loewen bought his $11 quick pick ticket from the 7-Eleven Food Store at 1370 Main Street in Winnipeg.

Steven Gorman and Charlene Kletke discovered their win when Gorman stopped at his sister's house and scanned their ticket using the WCLC Lottery Manager app.

“He came in with the ticket and asked me to check it on my phone too,” Kletke remembered. “I did – but I didn’t really know what I was looking at. There was a 4 at the end of the number that made me think it was an error.”

Along with their million-dollar prize, the pair won a couple of small prizes on the same ticket – bringing the total amount to $1,000,004.

“We checked it on our phones a bunch of times,” Kletke said. “But I wanted to check it at a store and have someone else tell me it was true. But I didn’t want to go when there would be a lot of people in the store.”

She waited until the next afternoon, when Winnipeg’s final playoff hockey game against Las Vegas had already started.

“It seemed like a good time; I thought everyone would be home watching the game,” she laughed.

Now that they know their win is real, Gorman and Kletke have started thinking about what they’ll do with their windfall.

“I’m buying a new truck,” Gorman said. “I’ve never had a brand-new vehicle before.”

“I’m going to sit and think about it for a while,” Kletke said. “I know it’s going to make my life easier.”

Gorman bought the winning $11 quick pick ticket from the Shell Food Store at 2501 Portage Avenue.

Aaron Hemminger deleted email notifying him of his $1 million MAXMILLIONS prize.

Hemminger bought his $6 quick pick ticket, with EXTRA, through With, players are notified of any prize by email.

“I saw the email on Saturday morning. I’m used to getting emails for small prizes – like $2,” he said. “I deleted it without reading it, but then I logged into my account and saw a prize amount with a bunch of zeroes.”

“I thought it was $100,000, but my girlfriend said, ‘I think that’s $1 million!’”

“My heart started racing,” he remembered. “I started thinking who should I tell? How is this going to change my life?”

Hemminger decided to take it slow. At first, only he and his girlfriend knew about the win. He broke the news to his dad after a round of golf.

“I’ve always leaned on my dad for advice,” he said. “I wanted to talk it over with him first.”

Later, Hemminger let his mom in on the secret too.

The winner said he’s not going to rush into any quick decisions.

“I’ve got a lot to think about, and a lot of people to talk to,” he said. “When you think about winning the lottery, you think about cars and trips and stuff like that. But now, I’m thinking about how I can use it to change our lives forever.”

“It’s not just a prize. It’s an opportunity.”
